Toegepast 12

Toegepast 12

Design Platform Limburg and art center Z33 annually organise TOEGEPAST: a presentation of young design talent. That the formula works becomes clear from previous editions. Recently graduated designers who take their first halting steps in TOEGEPAST, have by now acquired name and fame internationally.

TOEGEPAST is not an ordinary design competition. The selected designers can work together with other designers and specialists on their design for a year. Each participant gets 1000 Euros for the development of the design. TOEGEPAST pays attention to designers. The work is presented to a broad public in Z33 and is incorporated into the catalogue of TOEGEPAST 13 and the press campaign around TOEGEPAST.

Moreover each participant will get a personal portfolio fiche on 1000 copies. TOEGEPAST is a springboard to a professional career. A joint search for company and industry also starts with TOEGEPAST. The selected designers receive starters’ advice (copyright, offers, contracts...) and can extend their network through Design Platform Limburg en Z33.

Wim Buts

Wim Buts

Designers are ‘designed’ through their training. With this starting point Wim Buts examined design education in Antwerp, Genk and Eindhoven. By placing their method and history next to each other, he reached three visions with regard to designs. In order to test the theory against the practice, Wim organised three identical workshops with students. The course and the results of the workshops are presented in book form and on video. Ontwerpers Ontworpen (Designers designed) shows how the vision of an education is reflected in the creation process of the designer.

The Cold War was a battle between ideologies, but the meaning can still be seen today. The fact that certain symbols are still visible intrigues Tom Vanwelkenhuyzen. Unfinished Business is a graphic experiment about the Cold War. Three concepts are central: power, fear and mortality. In order to portray these cultural concepts, Tom contrasted them with nature. For this he worked with moulds, turfs and projections in a used mine site. By balancing on the borders of graphic design he brings his story.

Tom Peeters

Tom Peeters

People make machines, but what if machines were to make people? In his study into the relationship between man and machine Tom Peeters turns the roles around. Man becomes submissive to the functioning of the machine. Dysfunctional reflects man’s mechanized creation process. The machine generates a graphic code, based on a stylised proportion of the face. Using a male and female cell a human is then created. Thus man appears as a pile of organic material from the point of view of the machine.

Hanne De Wyngaert

Hanne De Wyngaert

Young girls who act as a role model towards the outside world, but are at the same time wrestling with their dark side. On the one hand decent and loved, on the other side fascinated by sex, drugs and violence. This contradiction forms the leitmotiv in the About Girls Like Laura collection of Hanne the Wyngaert. Hanne buried herself in Laura Palmers’ diary, written by Jennifer Lynch. She collected a series of photographs of missing adolescent young girls. The result is a collection of Laura-like girls who try to invoke their dreams.
